New Study Suggests Eating A Big Breakfast Can Help You Lose Weight

Conducted at Tel Aviv University, the study indicates that eating more at breakfast, even fatty foods, is still better than eating a big dinner

New Israeli study suggests you eat your cookies and muffins at breakfast

A new study conducted by Tel Aviv University’s Daniela Jakubowicz, of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine and of the Diabetes Unit at Holon’s Wolfson Medical Center, suggests that eating a ton at breakfast, even those fatty muffins and croissants, can actually help you lose weight.

According to the study, our metabolism is affected greatly by our ‘body clock,’ and eating a big breakfast galvanizes our metabolic process, keeping it at a high level throughout the day. People who eat a big breakfast, as opposed to a big dinner, Jakubowicz argues, are much more susceptible to lose weight.

Alongside TAU’s Julio Wainstein and Hebrew University’s Oren Foy and Maayan Barnea, Jakubowicz studied 93 obese women, who were divided into two separate groups, who were both allotted a 1400-calorie-per-day intake, the findings of which were later published in the medical journal Obesity.

The first group ate 700 cals at breakfast, 500 at lunch and 200 at dinner, while the second group ate 200 calories at breakfast, 500 at lunch, and 700 and dinner. Both groups were given the same foods to eat.

Jakubowicz and her fellow researchers discovered that, while members of both groups lost weight, the timing of consumption was critical to weight loss. Those who ate a big breakfast lost 17.8 pounds after the study, while though in the other group lost only 7.3 pounds.

Jakubowicz also discovered that those in the big breakfast group had less desire to snack later on in the day, and displayed a decrease in insulin, glucose, cholesterol, and the hormone responsible for regulating hunger, ghrelin. Glucose levels in the blood deteriorated rapidly in this group as well; high levels of glucose in blood can often lead to strokes and heart attacks.

What may be the most breakthrough advancement of this new research is that even eating fatty foods like cakes, muffins and pastries at breakfast will still help you lose weight, if you don’t eat them again at dinner time.

An avid researcher on the subject, Jakubowicz has long studied the effects of calorie timing and how to establish the optimal methods for people to lose weight. In fact, a study she conducted last year concluded that participants who indulged in ‘forbidden foods’ lost more weight than people who completely avoided those foods.

By comparing one group that eat less at breakfast and more at dinner to a group that ate a larger breakfast – including dessert – and smaller dinner, the participants in the dessert-group were less inclined to cheat on their diets, and lost 40 pounds (each) more than those in the other group.

“The participants in the low carbohydrate diet group had less satisfaction, and felt that they were not full,” said Jakubowicz. “But the group that consumed a bigger breakfast, including dessert, experienced few if any cravings for these foods later in the day.”

The study seems to prove what your mother has always been telling you: that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
