Lieberman and Okada Meet in Tokyo
The two foreign ministers met Tuesday to discuss security, technology.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman met with his Japanese counterpart, Katsuya Okada, in Tokyo Tuesday. The two discussed both regional and international issues of security.
According to Lieberman, in order to advance the peace process with the Palestinians, talks should be held directly, not through a mediator, referring to the current U.S.-mediated “proximity talks”.
Japan is also in the midst of territorial dispute with its neighbours, says Lieberman, but does not threaten violence. Instead, it is the country’s nature to cooperate and solve disputes peacefully – a method which the Middle East could stand to emulate, says Lieberman.
According to a statement made by Japanese Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Japan welcomes the start of proximity talks between Israel and Palestinians. Japan has hosted several conferences to help build confidence between the parties, and “will continue to make its efforts to contribute to promoting peace in the Middle East together with the international community.”
Aside from Middle East relations, Lieberman and Okada discussed ways in which the two countries could strengthen economic ties, as well as the potential future development of alternative energy sources. Scientific and technological cooperation, including on space projects, were also discussed.
Tuesday’s meeting elicited a positive response from both parties, where Lieberman made sure to thank Okada for Japan's support in welcoming Israel into the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
The two nations' next bilateral work group meeting is scheduled for the end of the year.
