Palestinian Linked to 72 Munich Attack Dies
Funeral held for Amin al-Hindi, who was involved in murder of 11 Israeli athletes.
A funeral has been held in Gaza for Amin al-Hindi, who was the last remaining link to the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre. Al-Hindi reportedly died of cancer of the liver and pancreas in a Jordanian hospital Tuesday, at the age of 70.
Ata Khairy, the Palestinian envoy to Jordan says that al-Hindi underwent surgery in Jordan last week before slipping into a coma. His body was then transported Wednesday to the West Bank en route to the Gaza Strip for the funeral. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and senior Palestinian leaders were in attendance.
Earlier in the summer, the mastermind behind this attack that killed 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team, Mohammed Oudeh, also passed away, at the age of 73. Mahmoud Abbas described Oudeh as “a wonderful brother, a friend, a tough and uncompromising fighter."
In his time, al-Hindi led the Palestinian General Intelligence Service under the late Palestinian president Yasser Arafat. During the 1970s, he served as a security officer in the Palestine Liberation Organization’s ruling Fatah movement. He was also allegedly a member of Black September, a militant offshoot of Fatah behind the Munich attacks.
