On Wednesday, Minister of State Peter Kent met with President Shimon Peres at his home. Kent reaffirmed Canada's support for Israel in the face of terrorism. The Minister and President spoke about the common threat that Iran's nuclear ambitions pose to both Israel and the entire world.

Minister Kent spoke about his consultations with Deputy Minister Ayalon and Canada’s commitment to exploring opportunities to work together to broaden what is already a deep and positive relationship.

They discussed the Americas, Israel being very interested in Canada's three-pillared approach to its relationships in the hemisphere (democracy, security, and prosperity), and touched on Canada’s priorities and concerns, Canada ultimately very encouraged to see such a strong interest by the Israeli government.

The meeting wrapped up with both speaking of their support for the peace negotiations and reiterated their commitment to direct bilateral talks that will lead to peace and stability in the region.

Kent also met with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman regarding the importance of continuing to build on the strong relationship between Canada and Israel, who share many common values and priorities.

They also discussed Iran and the threat that it poses not just to Israel, but the entire world. Lieberman joined other members of the Israeli government in thanking Canada for its stance and continued support on issues in the region.

Throughout the visit, Kent reiterated Canada's support for Israel's right to live in peace with its neighbours within secure boundaries. The Government of Canada continues to support the creation of an independent Palestinian state as part of a two-state solution negotiated with Israel.
