Rosen Resigns from NYU After Offensive Tweets About Logan's Assault
New York University has accepted the resignation of Nir Rosen, a fellow at the university's Center on Law and Security, following a series of tweets which made light of the rape and beating of CBS chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan in Cairo on Tuesday.
Logan, working for 60 Minutes, was reporting on the celebrations in Tahrir Square following the resignation of Mubarak when she and her crew were surrounded by a group of hostile men. Logan was separated from her crew and suffered a brutal sexual assault and beating before being rescued by a group of women and Egyptian soldiers. She has since been transported back to the U.S., hospitalized and released Tuesday evening.
Rosen, whose Twitter feed is filled with appalling commentary which I'm sure he finds amusing, decided to chime in with his thoughts on the assault, "Lara Logan had to outdo Anderson," in reference to Anderson Cooper's assault in Cairo earlier in the month. "I'm rolling my eyes at all the attention she'll get." He follows that up with "jesus christ, at a moment when she is going to become a martyr and glorified we should at least remember her role as a major war monger."
If attention is what Rosen seeks, attention he will get. The ill-thought tweets drew a backlash of comments which forced Rosen to respond, "Yes yes its [sic] wrong that happened to her. Of course. I don't support that. But, it would have been funny if it happened to Anderson too," which is likely not the right response, shifting the perceived humor of sexual assault from Logan to Anderson.
Rosen then went to delete all tweets related to the matter and apologize. "[I] forgot Twitter is not exactly private," he joked, later adding "I offer my deepest apologies to Ms. Logan, her friends and her family. I never meant to hurt anyone."
The most surprising aspect is not Rosen's comments, as if you read his Twitter feed you'll understand, but that NYU's Center for Law and Security did not fire him now, or for past comments. He has constantly wished pain and suffering on fellow journalists including Wolf Blitzer. "Lets not forget the pain and suffering this war has caused,' says Wolf Blitzer, not Iraqi pain of course. I wish pain and suffering on Wolf."
Rosen, a Jew, is quite open about his hate for Israel. Between trying to pitch his book on every 10th tweet, he manages to throw several jabs on Israel and America. On Jan 19th he wrote "how can anybody take Obama seriously when he lectures the Chinese on Human Rights? go lecture your friends in Saudi, Egypt, Israel first."
On October 10th he tweeted, "new racist Israeli citizenship law should be celebrated. It exposes what Zionism really is, will further ostracize Israel, speed its demise." And helping his wishful demise would be Iran's nuclear program, for which he doesn't see a problem, "I wish all these Sunni Arab dictators on Wikileaks would explain what the hell is so bad about Iran having nuclear weapons."
I wouldn't recommend reading his Twitter feed, which is why I didn't link to it. He is obviously obsessed with fame, and likely relishes this exposure. The world will forget about him in a matter of days, or even minutes, which is exactly when we can expect him to tweet his next senseless thought.
