Albert Einstein Archive to be Digitized By Hebrew University of Jerusalem
80,000 documents given to Hebrew University of Jerusalem to be made accessible online.
Albert EinsteinPic: NULLMarking the 132nd anniversary of Albert Einstein’s birth, it has been announced that an archive of his entire body of research will be made accessible online.
After the Noble Prize-winning physicist died in 1955, he bequeathed 80,000 documents to Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
“A $500,000 grant from the Polonsky Foundation of London will enable the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to digitize its Albert Einstein Archives and make it available online to researchers and students everywhere. The announcement was made on Einstein's birthday and also on Israel National Science Day, both falling on March 14. The digitization project will ensure the preservation and accessibility for over 80,000 documents in the archives,” stated a press release from the university.
“It is the most important collection of his papers and an important collection for 20th century history,” said Roni Grosz, Hebrew University’s director of the Albert Einstein Archive.
The Einstein documents are expected to take a year to digitize, and will made available on the Albert Einstein Archive website for public viewing.
Hebrew University of Jerusalem is Israel’s oldest university. Founded in 1918, its first Board of Governors consisted of Einstein, Sigmund Freud, philosopher Martin Buber, and Chaim Weizmann, president of the Zionist Organization and the first president of the State of Israel.
