Another Flotilla Planned for Gaza in June
One year after Israel seized a Turkish activist ship in the now infamous “flotilla” incident, a new flotilla is preparing to head to Gaza in June in another attempt to break the blockade, increasing tensions between the former allies.
According to Quassima Ibn Salah of the IHH, a Turkish Islamist charity, “a dozen boats carrying supplies and passengers from several European ports, including Marseille, will sail to Gaza in the third week of June.”
Several organizations including the Swedish and Greek branches of the Ship to Gaza association will join the new initiative called Freedom Flotilla II.
Israel and Turkey have yet to reach an agreement following last year’s May 31st disaster which saw Israeli marines board the Mavi Marmara, the flagship of an aid flotilla bound for Gaza, but Israel has already asked Turkey to rethink the proposed convoy.
"If they (Israel) desire our friendship, the criteria are obvious," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said, pointing to the Turks’ demands for an apology and compensation.
After last year’s flotila, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said that his country’s relationship with Israel would "never be the same again".
