The man arrested in Egypt on Sunday, June 13 for allegedly being an Israeli spy is an American-Israeli originally from New York.

Ilan Grapel, a graduate of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, moved to Israel and enlisted in the IDF Paratrooper’s Brigade during the Second Lebanon War and interned at the Israeli Supreme Court.

According to a former classmate of Grapel, he since had returned to America and was performing a legal internship in Cairo when he was arrested.

In a 2006 interview with the New York Daily News, Irene Grapel said her son enlisted in the IDF because he "didn't want a boring life" and that he wanted to experience some excitement and adventure before he enrolled in graduate school.

Photos of Grapel have been published in Egyptian newspapers, and the Al-Ahram daily identified him as a “Mossad officer who tried to sabotage the Egyptian revolution.”
