Netanyahu Refuses to Apologize to Turkey
Despite U.S. insistence, Israeli PM maintains he will not apologize to Turkey for flotilla.
Despite a personal request from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintains that Israel will not apologize to Turkey for its Navy commando boarding of the Mavi Marmara, on its way to Gaza as part of a flotilla in May, 2010.
Netanyahu also was reported to have turned down another chance to apologize after a request was made by U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration request to apologize to Turkey.
Turkey maintains that it will not resume its ties with Israel until a formal apology is made, and families of the victims are properly compensated. So far, Israel will only go as far as offering its “regret” - not enough for the Turks.
The Palmer report, which will include the findings of a United Nations inquiry into the matter, should be available sometime next week. Publication of the document was held back in the hopes that Israel and Turkey would reconcile.
