PA President arrives in New York
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrives in New York this Wednesday (September 21) for the United Nations General Assembly. Later in the week, Netanyahu is expected to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama, as well as other world leaders in town for the annual U.N. event.
Abbas arrived in New York on Monday, and said that he
expects his people will be in a "very difficult situation" following his United
Nations statehood bid.
Netanyahu and president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, will both address the General Assembly on Friday, followed by the much-advertised bid by Abbas to the U.N. in which he will seek full membership in the U.N. Security Council for full membership for the state of Palestine.
The Obama administration plans to use the veto if the bid is successful and, as of now, Obama does not have any meetings with Abbas scheduled.
"The U.N. is not a place where Israel wins praise, but I think that it is important that I go there in order to represent both the State of Israel and the truth -- and the truth is that Israel wants peace and the truth is that the Palestinians are doing everything to torpedo direct peace negotiations," Netanyahu said on Sunday, September 18.
President Obama has also made it clear that he feels the only true way for Israel and the Palestinians to gain lasting peace is through negotiations with one another; an offer rejected by Abbas in the past.
"It (Abbas’ bid for statehood) will fail because it must go through the U.N. Security Council. Decisions that are binding on U.N. members pass through the Security Council," explained Netanyahu. "I am convinced that the activity of the U.S., which is deeply cooperating with us, as well as the activity of other governments with which we are also cooperating will result in the failure of this attempt."
