Obama Scheduled to Meet with Netanyahu, Abbas Today in New York
Meeting with P.A. leader added to U.S. President’s schedule
U.S. President Barack Obama is now planning on meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in New York, today, Wednesday, September 21, the same day the president is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The move to meet with Abbas is believed to be an attempt to
avoid a major political clash at the United Nations ahead of Abbas’ bid for
Palestinian statehood.
The Obama administration has promised to veto such a move and insists that
the only true way to gain peace in the Middle East is through direct
negotiations between the two sides.
"With both the Israelis and the Palestinians the president will be able to say very directly why we believe action at the United Nations is not the way" to achieve a Palestinian state, Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said.
Peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis – mediated by the United States – came to an abrupt end a year ago after an Israeli moratorium on construction in the West Bank expired.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Wednesday
there will be no new freeze on settlement building.
Netanyahu has said the Palestinians' U.N. bid will be unsuccessful and that the Palestinians
will ask for renewed talks in the future. However, Turkish Foreign Minister
Ahmet Davutoglu said on Tuesday, September his government "fully" supports the
Palestinian bid for statehood.
On Monday, September 19, Abbas explained his plan for membership in the U.N. to
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The U.N. chief responded by asking both sides to
resume negotiations within what he called "a legitimate and balanced
framework."
Abbas insists that a Palestinian state must have the borders that were in place
before Israel took control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967
Arab-Israeli war.
