Select your Avatar and raise funds from the comfort of your home

Can you imagine running a marathon through the streets of Toronto in December with Albert Einstein leading the way?

With the winds, cold and snow that make Toronto an indoor wonderland for three months a year, running outside, even to raise money for a good cause, is not a big priority for this city’s running enthusiasts.

And running with Einstein? I’m afraid that dear old Albert left this world in 1955.

But, now, thanks to today’s technology, and The Canadian Friends of Hebrew University, a virtual marathon to raise funds in support of the University’s Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada (IMRIC) will allow you to do good without leaving the comfort – and the warmth – of your living room.

There is still time to register for 1 of 10 virtual avatars that will be “running” in the Sunday, December 11th virtual marathon, taking place at 3pm on www.imricvirtualmarathon.com.

Each avatar runner represents a condition or disease that is the subject of IMRIC research and funding in partnership with Canadian laboratories and universities. When a participant selects an avatar, their registration funds are directed toward that research partnership. The 10 avatar runners will be supporting research fighting diseases and conditions which include: HIV/AIDS, Prostate Cancer, Breast Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Parkinson's Disease, Visual Impairment, Autism and Spinal Cord Injury.

After the VMMR is complete, the winning avatar will receive the largest monetary prize and the remaining funds will be divided among the sponsoring organizations.

The virtual host for the marathon is none other than virtual Albert Einstein one of the Hebrew University's founders.

The Hebrew University's Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada (IMRIC) conducts fundamental and applied biomedical research on genes and proteins controlling living cells' basic processes. To unlock the mysteries of diseases and find the keys to their causes, treatment and prevention, IMRIC scientists' multidisciplinary approach broadens the knowledge base of specific cellular and molecular changes that may be involved in causing disease. This work - vital to understanding most illnesses challenging medical science - advances understanding of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases.
