In an ongoing effort to bring to light the role of Israeli women in society, women protesting against the separation of males and females sat at the front of segregated buses in Israel on New Year’s Day.

The #402 “Mehadrin” bus to Jerusalem - on which the women protested included stops in the ultra Orthodox community of Bnei Brak and through Beit Shemesh, where just days ago thousands of Israeli men and women gathered to protest the matter outside a modern girls’ school.

The protest of the “Mehadrin”, or gender-segregated bus company, was organized by an initiative called Be Free Israel.

On the same day as the bus protest, the chief rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces told military rabbis that they must do all they can to prevent Israeli women from being included in the military.

“There will be no exclusion of women in the IDF,” Rabbi Rafi Peretz said. “We especially, who know the importance of respecting a woman, must make sure this controversy won’t penetrate our ranks.”

Rabbi Peretz’s comments came in days after a record five Israeli women graduated from the Israeli Air Force Pilots course. It was the largest number of women to ever graduate from the army’s most prestigious course.

"A country where women sit in the pilot's seat is a country where women should be able to sit anywhere,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the graduation ceremony. "There is no bigger proof to the absurdity of the exclusion of women than the fact that you stand here today."
