Newt Gingrich’s run for the U.S. Republican presidential nomination has received a healthy shot in the arm in the form of a $5 million donation to his “Winning Our Future,” an independent committee, or Super PAC.

Dr. Miriam Adleson, wife of Sheldon Adelson, a longtime supporter, conservative ally and friend of Gingrich, made the donation in the wake of Newt’s upset in the South Carolina primary.

Miriam and Sheldon have now contributed more than $10 million to Winning Out Future.

A Super PAC is an independent organization allowed to raise funds to indirectly support a candidate but which, by law, cannot have any connection to a candidate’s campaign.

Sheldon Adelson is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., the parent company of Venetian Macao Limited which operates The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino and the Sands Expo and Convention Center. He is currently the 8th wealthiest American ]and 16th wealthiest person in the world,]with a net worth of $21.5 billion.

In 2006, the Adelsons contributed $25 million to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority. In December, 2011, the Adelson’s doubled that gift with another donation of $25 million. Since 2007 the Adelson Family Foundation has made contributions totaling $100 million to Birthright Israel.
