As of today, the only Israeli cities allowed to operate public transportation on Shabbat are Eilat and Haifa.

However, after a resolution was approved on February 20 by the Tel Aviv City Council, that might change soon.

The resolution seeking to allow buses to run during Shabbat in Tel Aviv was approved by a vote of 13-7

Despite the approval, the head of the Tel Aviv Transportation Authority Moshe Tiomkin said that he did not expect the move to succeed.

"There is no connection between the headlines and reality," said Tiomkin. "The decision was to hold a discussion on the matter in the city management committee only and no more than that."

Meanwhile, the controversial resolution is, as expected, being met with some less than enthusiastic responses by many, including Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau who, in a letter, made his feelings clear.

"This is a severe blow to the holiness of the Shabbat, which is a remnant of Creation, a reminder of the Exodus from Egypt, a day of rest for every worker and a day of spiritual ascension and the unity of the family," read, in part, Rabbi Lau’s letter which was addressed to the mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai.
