Shahar Peer in Semifinals of Dubai Championship
Israeli tennis sensation continues to dominate.
Shahar Peer, the Israeli tennis sensation who is ranked 22nd in the world, has advanced to the semifinals of the Dubai Championship, beating Na Li in a quarterfinal match on Thursday.
Peer won in two sets against the Chinese player, 7-5, 3-0. The first set was a marathon lasting just under one hour. The second set ended early when Na withdrew due to a back injury.
Peer reached the quarterfinals after beating top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 7-5 on Wednesday.
“I played very, very good, and I’m really happy,” Peer told Haaretz. “I was dominating from the first game until the end.”
One year ago, Dubai refused to grant the Israeli player an entry visa to compete in the tournament, sparking an outcry across the tennis world. The tournament was fined $300,000 by the Women’s Tennis Association.
