$ to Fight Sex Abuse in NY Orthodox Community Unused
Education program gets off to slow start.
Nearly $1 million dollars earmarked for fighting sexual abuse in New York City’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities is sitting unused, while in the meantime, a second cash-strapped program has been set up.
According to the New York Daily News, in April 2009, New York State set aside $950,000 for a fund created by State Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Brooklyn Democrat, to educate Hasidic Jews about child abuse, how to fight it and how to speak out against it.
However, none of the money, which was included in the 2009 budget of the Office of Family and Children’s Services, has been spent. Hikind is still working out the details of the program, called Shomrei Yeldainu (“Guardians of our Children”). The program is the first state-funded sexual abuse awareness campaign targeting a single ethnic group.
"You have to develop something that is done correctly working with the rabbis and leaders," Hikind told the New York Daily News.
"Apparently, the Hasidim will only go to the Hasidim for help," Edward Borges, Office of Family and Children’s Services spokesman told the newspaper
At the same time, Project Kol Tzedek has been started on a tiny budget funded by a $40,000 grant from Altira Group Inc, a cigarette company, that pays an Orthodox social worker.
So far, almost 100 people have called the hotline, with more than 30 ultra-Orthodox men arrested and 16 charged with felonies.
