DNA: The Future of Jewish Genealogy
Many families pass down to each generation this Sephardic oral history and most families laugh about it, asking “How could we, Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazim, be Sephardic?” However, DNA doesn’t lie, genetic matches don’t lie. Judy and I encourage all Sephardim and Mizrahim to get involved in genetic genealogy through FamilyTreeDNA.com and add to the databases. Many Jewish DNA samples are still Ashkenazim and we need many more Sephardim and Mizrahim to participate, in general.
What are you final thoughts on the state of Jewish genealogy today?
This month I’ve been travelling and speaking in Hong Kong and in Australia, speaking to various groups and conferences. The interest in genealogy is growing everywhere among all groups. However, timing is urgent. If you have older relatives, run, do not walk to interview them and record their recollections and information. For some families, the only information is in the minds of older relatives, so their memories are essential. Begin your research, record what you know and what your relatives know. Do it now before it is too late.
I hear so many people say “When I was young, I didn’t want to listen to my parents and grandparents talk about family. Now that I’m their age, there’s no one for me to ask. And I have so many questions.”
Others say that their children aren’t interested. But their grandchildren might be some day. Leave the family history to them where they can find it. We never know where the next young star of Jewish genealogy will come from or what spark might inspire them.
At your Pesach seder, share your family history with those present, with all the generations. Ask questions, listen to the answers.
Take your family for a journey down discovery road. You won’t be disappointed.
