Geoff Schwartz, who recently left the Vikings to sign with the Chiefs, is one of nine Jewish football players in the NFL. In honor of Passover, the offensive tackle published a list of Ten Random Facts About Being a Jewish Athlete.”

Schwartz was born and raised in Los Angeles in a Conservative Jewish household. He attended Hebrew school and synagogue, and didn’t begin playing football until he was 13 because his parents wanted him to focus on Bar Mitzvah study.

Schwartz’s brother, Mitchell, also plays in the NFL for the Browns. As Geoff points out in his list, they make up more than 20% of Jews in the NFL.

Other Jewish NFL players include Adam Podlesh (Bears), Taylor Mays (Bengals), Erik Lorig (Buchaneers), Antonio Garay (Chargers), Brian de la Puente (Saints), Greg Camarillo (Saints), and Gabe Carimi (Bears).

On Schwartz’s random facts list, he shares that he and his brother are the first Jewish brothers to play in the NFL since 1923, he doesn’t keep kosher (and loves bacon, cheeseburgers, and pork chops), and carries a personal Menorah and Chanukah candles with him on the road and lights them before games in hotel rooms.
