Leopold Engleitner, the oldest known survivor of the Nazi concentration camps, and a conscientious objector who spoke publicly about his experiences with students has passed away at the age of 107.

The man on which the documentary “Unbroken Will” is based, Engleitner was imprisoned in the Buchenwald, Niederhagen and Ravensbrueck concentration camps between 1939 and 1943 after refusing to renounce his Jehovah’s Witness faith.

However, Engleitner eventually won his freedom, albeit when he weighted only 62 pounds, and only on the condition that he agreed to spend the rest of his life working as a slave laborer.

He went to work on a farm near his home town of Bad Ischl in Austria and was released from forced labor by U.S. troops in 1946 after he spent some time hiding in the mountains to avoid being forced to servce in the German army.

Engleitner became somewhat of a celebrity when Austrian author and film producer Bernhard Rammerstorfer published his biography and created a documentary based on his incredibly courageous life in 1999.

He then began a career as a public speaker in Europe and the United States.

“It’s very hard for me to announce the painful news of the passing away of my best friend,” Rammerstorfer wrote of his friend’s death who died peacefully on April 21.
