Hans Lipschis Claims He Worked at Auschwitz “As a Cook, the Whole Time”

A 93-year-old resident of Aalen, Germany, Hans Lipschis, whose name graces the list of the ten most wanted Nazis, was arrested on Monday.

A former guard at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Lipschis, who was deported from the US for lying about his Nazi past, was taken into custody after authorities concluded there was “compelling evidence” that he was involved in crimes at Auschwitz while posted there from 1941 to 1945, prosecutor Claudia Krauth said.

In the past, without strong enough evidence to link him to specific war crimes, charges could not be laid against Lipschis in Germany.

But today, even without proof of participation in a specific crime, a person who served at a death camp can be charged with accessory to murder because the camp’s sole function was to kill people.

In April, Lipschis told the German newspaper Die Welt am Sonntag that he was in Auschwitz “as a cook, the whole time.”

His arrest comes in the wake of the announcement made by Germany’s Central Office for Clarification of Nazi Crimes that it had given details regarding some 50 former Auschwitz guards to German courts.

In the meantime, Krauth said a doctor has confirmed Lipschis’ health remains good enough for him to be kept in detention.

Lipschis does not currently have a lawyer, and a public defender has not yet been appointed, she said.
