Orthodox Jewish Woman Turns to Social Media For Divorce

24-year-old Rivky Stein, an Orthodox Jew residing in Brooklyn, has turned to social media in hopes of both encouraging her husband to give her a “get” and spreading the word about divorce practices in her community.

According to Jewish law, women can only be divorced from their husband if they receive a “get”, which is essentially permission to leave. If their husbands deny them a get, they become agunut (a “chained wife”) and cannot remarry.

On Stein’s Facebook page entitled “Redeem Rivky: Demand that Yoel Weiss Give his Wife a Get”, she hopes to raise awareness to her own cause, as well as all the other Orthodox Jewish women in similar circumstances.

According to the New York Daily News, Stein and her husband Weiss married in 2008, but she left him after he allegedly raped and abused her. Weiss refuses to grant Stein a get until their custody battle over their two children is settled.

“Rivky lives in a cramped basement apartment in Boro Park, Brooklyn from which she is being evicted as the result of threats made by Yoel Weiss against her landlord. She makes a pitiful salary working two part-time jobs. Prevented from attending college, she has few marketable skills. A former foster child – removed from her parents’ home by the state — she is practically alone in the world,” the Facebook page describes.

“Her tiny basement apartment was the first safe haven she had in the course of her marriage to Yoel Weiss, a marriage where rape, beatings and starvation were served as casually as meals. In a daring escape from her husband two years earlier, her former foster parents took her in, allowing her to live, rent-free.”

Stein’s Facebook page current has around 5,400 likes and is quickly growing.

“I’m trying to open eyes in my community… I’ve been getting so much feedback from people thanking me. I’m really here to empower women,” she told the New York Daily News.
