Passover starts tomorrow. Time to get together with family, eat good food, and share stories.

Shalom Life asked 5 of our favorite Jewish comedians to share a Passover memory.

What did Rain Pryor have to say?

Memory #2- Rain Pryor

Why is this night different from all other nights? Because on this night I, got talked into leading the Passover Seder at the Yacht Club my grandparents had been a member of for 30 years. Yes, yacht club, and that in and of itself could be a story, but let’s just say my bubbe and grandpa were just a wee bit tired of cooking Passover arguing over who likes the knaydlach hard or soft. This night was going to be a night to remember, but I digress.

So there I was delivering Passover Seder from the one of many thirty minute Haggadahs to a room of my grandparents’ friends. The Seder was ending and all participated in the humorous Seder rap, when I say, “…and now we pour the wine and open the door for the Pharaoh Elijah.” This is the part when the needle slides across a record album and silence fills the air. “Did she just say Pharaoh Elijah?” There was a very audible gasp, and my grandparents clutched hands under the table. I could feel beads of perspiration gathering at the roots of my hairline. I had to think quickly, and out of nowhere I say, “Well, we’ve been waiting so long I forgot who was coming.” The room broke out into laughter and I’ve been asked back every year in the hopes I will do it again.

Rain Pryor is an acclaimed director, actor, stand-up comedian, educator, dynamic speaker, mother and wife and Artistic Director of the Strand Theater in Baltimore MD.

Pryor is a headlining stand-up in her own right, and is not the drop it like it’s hot kind. She fills her own shoes where stand-up is concerned, and is not trying to be her iconic father Richard Pryor. Her comedy attracts suburban housewives and their husbands, making them fall in love with her ability to open up her life and talk ‘real talk’. She has been featured regularly in Baltimore MD with friends Mickey Cucchiella (host of 98ROCK) & Marc Unger, tours with Marc Price (“Skippy” from “Family Ties”) and Craig Shoemaker ‘The Love Master’. Pryor and Cucchiella are currently developing several projects. The Baltimore Sun chose Rain as one of 3 area comics to watch for.

“Fried Chicken and Latkes” is Pryor’s award winning solo show based on her life. It is a irreverent and poignant look at racism in the late 60’s early 70’s. Rain completely wrote and created her show including adding some of her own original music and lyrics to the production. Rain was a Los Angeles Times “Critics Choice” and her singing voice and sense of timing were hailed as rare gifts.

“Fried Chicken and Latkes” played to sold out crowds and standing ovations every night at the 375 seat Canon Theatre in Beverly Hills, CA, and repeated that success at the Culture Project in New York, Chicago, Ohio, Virginia, Texas, and Scotland.

Growing up Black and Jewish gives Rain a unique perspective on race, religion and spirituality. She shares her views and has lead panel discussions on diversity in education and in the entertainment industry at Princeton University, The Jewish Federation of Los Angeles, Chicago and Baltimore. “Fried Chicken and Latkes makes is Off Broadway Debut April 18-22 smarttix.com.
