The Canadian delegation, led by Environment Minister and Thornhill MP Peter Kent, walked out on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s address on Wednesday at the United Nations environmental summit in Brazil.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) initially broke the news on its twitter feed around 4 p.m.

[The Ahmadinejad regime] “continue[s] to pose the most significant threats to global peace and security today,” Kent’s spokesperson, Adam Sweet told the Canadian Press.

Sweet said that the Conservative MP wanted to send a strong message to Iran and the entire world that Canada will not tolerate Iran’s radical and dangerous rhetoric.

The environmental conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, dubbed “Rio+20,” is aimed to bring together delegations from 193 countries to discuss sustainable development issues, such as ocean and forest protection and ways to help poor nations use renewable energy, according to the Canadian Press.

Earlier this week, thousands of Jews, gays and human rights activists marched in Rio de Janeiro to protest Ahmadinejad’s presence at the conference, which began on Wednesday and will conclude Friday.

According to a later tweet by CIJA, delegates from the European Union, Israel, Australia, the US and UK also walked out on Ahmadinejad.
