Play in the MLB? Join A Baseball Birthright Trip!

The Times of Israel bring our attention to a new proposed initiative lead by filmmaker Jeremy Newberger and sports writer Jonathan Mayo: Baseball Birthright Israel.

Apparently, the duo are trying to organize a trip for former and current Jewish Major League Baseball players (there certainly are more than a few) and believe that they’ll get a warm response.

In fact, they are currently pitching the idea to selective players in the MLB, including Josh Zeid of the Houston Astros, Ike Davis of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Detroit Tigers’ own Ian Kinsler.

As a director/filmmaker with IronBound Films, Newberger also wants to document the Baseball Birthright trip, to focus on his and Mayo’s reflection of their respective Jewish identities.

“The trip could be great, and my partners at Ironbound and I believe a film about the specific meaning of the trip for each of the players would find an audience,” said Newberger in an interview with the Times of Israel. “We think a lot of baseball fans and a lot of Jewish Americans would be interested.”

Zeid (who played for Israel during the 2013 World Baseball Classic) said he would certainly join the program if it gets the go ahead.

Mayo, a senior writer for MLB.com, added that he hopes to “include past MLB players, like Shawn Green and Kevin Youkilis, as well as players in the minor leagues.”

We’ll keep you posted if Baseball Birthright Israel becomes a reality.

Sounds like a fun trip.
