During his recent trip to Jerusalem, Pope Francis journeyed to the Western Wall for a moment of prayer and to slip a small letter between the stones of Judaism’s holiest site.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation published this handwritten note, scribed on an official papal letterhead, in which the pontiff wrote out the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish.

The brief and poignant prayer is central in Christianity, and familiar to many the world over:

[Translated]“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will, be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us our daily bread. Forgive us for all our trespasses as we forgive all those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

In closing, the pope signed his letter simply as ‘Francis.’

Pope Francis lingered at the wall in Jerusalem’s Old City, as well as several other sites of religious significance in Jerusalem and Bethlehem. He also toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, the grave of writer and activist Theodor Herzl, an Israeli memorial to terrorist victims, and stopped at the West Bank security checkpoint.

This trip to Israel was part of a larger political tour, including brief stops in Jordan and the Palestinian territories.

While in Jerusalem, Pope Francis invited Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to join him together in prayer at the Vatican.
