Prominent Jewish Philanthropist Passes Away
Sami Rohr donated over $250 million to Jewish causes
Sami Rohr, a prominent Jewish philanthropist and international businessman, died this week in South Florida at the age of 86.
Rohr donated more than $250 million to Jewish causes around the world, part of which led to the creation of hundreds of Chabad-Lubavitch houses worldwide.
He reportedly contributed a large amount of funds to causes surrounding Jewish education and culture through his Rohr Family Foundation.
A Chabad spokesperson confirmed he died on Sunday, and was scheduled to be buried Tuesday at the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
In 2006, Rohr was honoured by Chabad upon his 80th birthday, and his children named a prize for Jewish literature after him called the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature.
The award was given out for the first time the following year, as it honours the contribution of contemporary writers in exploring and transmitting Jewish values.
Rohr was born in Berlin, Germany but grew up in Colombia after his family fled the Nazis. There he built a fortune in real estate before moving to Florida in 1981 with his wife.
He is credited with having laid the groundwork for a rebirth of Judaism across the former Soviet Union and also establishing Jewish centres on college campuses and at remote spots around the world.
