Rabbi Sued for Bris Mishap

Rabbi Mordechai Rosenberg from Pittsburgh is said to have acted with ‘a total disregard’ during the traditional ceremony

After causing “catastrophic and life-changing injury” to a baby boy, a rabbi from the Pittsburgh area is being sued by the baby’s parents.

The incident might very well end the campaign of a California-area rabbi who has been trying to get fathers involved with the circumcision process; now it seems if a mohel can’t get it right, chances are a father wouldn’t either.

In a lawsuit filed on Tuesday, Rabbi Mordechai Rosenberg is said to have acted “with a total disregard” for the son, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The suit identifies the parents of the 8-month-old only by their initials, and does not name the injuries the boy received.

According to the suit, the baby required reconstructive surgery and multiple visits for leech therapy. Calls to Rosenberg’s attorney were not returned to the Tribune-Review.

Rosenberg’s website says that he has been performing ritual circumcisions for nearly 25 years, and that he was trained by the late Yosef David Weisberg, commissioner of mohelim in Israel, and the chief mohel of Jerusalem.

According to his website, Rosenberg is recognized as a certified mohel by the american Board of Ritual Circumcision.

Speaking of mohels, anyone see the awesome and thought-provoking Lorde parody by the same name?
