Religious Jews Omit Torah’s X-Rated Parts

New bible Published for a New York-based all girl’s school

JTA brings our attention to a Bible study guide that was recently published for Beit Tziporah, an all-girls school in New Square, situated in a village comprised of Skverer Hasidim Jews in Rockland County, New York State.

The chumash (Bible), as blogger David Assaf of Tel Aviv University points out, is a censored version, leaving out entire chapters of the Book of Genesis, and other Bible passages that deal with sex, love, or are simply a bit too X-rated.

While some may find this sacrilegious to leave out certain passages of the Bible in teaching Judaism, it actually is a fairly rational decision, considering the content they’ve decided to omit, at least for a school consisting of young female children.

The section at the end of Genesis 19, for one, finds both of Lot’s daughters getting their father drunk off of wine so they could sleep with him – meanwhile he is unbeknownst to the whole thing – so they could get pregnant. That’s been removed.

Other sections include the Story of Onan, who purposely “spilled his seed” than impregnate Tamar, or when Judah and his daughter-in-law (disguised as a prostitute) share a sexual encounter.

For a Bible Study Guide, getting rid of these scenes isn’t really the worst idea.

Curiously, they also removed the entire first two parshas of Genesis, leaving out the story of the world’s creation, Adam and Eve, and Noah and the Tower of Babel.

The Bible instead begins at the story of Abraham.

For some strange reason, Assaf notes, the tale of Dina’s rape and a few other risque passages are still left in.
