Reza Aslan Calls Scarlett Johansson a Nazi Supporter

Compares SodaStream to Adolf Hitler in tweet he quickly deleted, but not quick enough for the entire Internet not to notice

Reza Aslan, well-known writer and academic, has compared the Israeli company SodaStream to Adolf Hitler, and implied that spokesperson Scarlett Johansson was a Nazi supporter, in a tweet he posted on Friday that was soon deleted.

On twitter, Aslan wrote: “Scarlett Johansson: Adolf is committed to building a bridge to peace between Germany and Poland,” wrote Aslan. He linked to a Huffington Post article in which the actress responds to critics of her representation of the company.

In a statement, Johansson said that “SodaStream is a company not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine,” which Aslan modified in his tweet to make his point. Johansson had also said that the company is “supporting neighbors working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights. That is what is happening in their Ma’ale Adumim factory every working day.”

According to SodaStream, it employs 550 Palestinian Arabs, all who are afforded the same benefits as the Israeli workers at their Ma’ale Adumum plant in the West Bank.

Aslan was quick to delete the tweet, but, since this is the internet, and everything lasts forever, a screenshot soon appeared. Petra Marquardt-Bigman, a blogger for Algemeiner tweeted: “@rezasaslan was apparently embarrassed enough to delete the tweet – but I have a screenshot.”

Aslan made headlines late in 2013 after he responded indignantly to a Fox News reporter who repeatedly probed him about why he, as a Muslim, had decided to write a book about the life of Jesus.

“Well, to be clear, I am a scholar of religions with four degrees including one in the New Testament and fluency in Biblical Greek, who has been studying the origins of Christianity for two decades, who also just happens to be a Muslim. So, it is not that I am just some Muslim writing about Jesus, I am an expert with a PhD in the history of religions,” replied Aslan.
