Indio Downey, the 20-year-old son of Robert Downey Jr., has been arrested in Los Angeles for possession of cocaine.
While sitting in the passenger seat of a car driving in West Hollywood, police offers pulled Downey over after they saw him smoking from a pipe. “The deputy drove up near him and saw him using a cocaine pipe,” Sgt. Dave Valentine said to the New York Daily News regarding the incident.
Los Angeles police officers, upon searching the car, also found cocaine in Downey’s possession and arrested him promptly.
Records show that he was released on bail shortly after.
In a statement, Robert Downey Jr. said, “Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it.”
He continued. “Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being. We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”
Downey himself has had a long-documented history with cocaine addiction, having struggled with substance abuse (including heroin) several times in the early 2000’s.
After two stints in prison, Downey Jr. finally became clean, prior to landing the lead in the Iron Man franchise.
The 49-year-old actor has reportedly earned some $74 million since June of last year – after all, Iron Man 3 was 2013’s highest grossing film – and was even named Most Powerful Actor by Forbes.
Indio – who appeared alongside his father in 2005’s Kiss Kiss, Bang, Bang – is currently out on bail.
