Saks Fifth Avenue is Keeping Collars Kosher

Yiddish collar tags part of ‘Think Yiddish, Dress British’ campaign allow you to dress Jewish, inside and out

Probably one of the stranger Jewish products we’ve seen this year is Saks Fifth Avenue’s collaboration with Swiss Stays. The two companies are responsible for a special collection of collar stays called “Think Yiddish, Dress British,” the Forward points out.

That’s right, collar stays, those things in your shirt that keep your shirt’s collar looking sharp. They’re usually plastic and boring-looking, not really designed for anything except support and certainly not to be seen. “Think Yiddish, Dress British,” though, are actually really cool, according to Swiss Stays’ founder David Schottenstein.

Rather than a strip of plastic that you inevitably lose, Schottenstein’s collar stays are made of metal with Yiddish words, and their English translation, printed on the inside. The stays are adjustable too, so you don’t have to constantly be looking for that plastic thing you accidentally lost after you laundered the shirt for the first time.

The stays come in steel for about $30, more if you want titanium or brass, and come with a variety of Yiddish words, like ‘meshugnah,’ ‘schlep,’ and ‘schmaltzy,’ alongside their English definitions.

Here’s a complete list of all the Yiddish words available:

-Bubkes

-Chutzpa

-Mensch

-Meshugnah

-Mish mosh

-Schnorrer

-Shvitzer

-Kibosh

-Kvetch

-Luftmensch

-Zafty

-Shekel

-Schlep

-Shlimazel

-Schloch

-Schmaltzy
