Following a high-speed chase early Friday morning that began when a Tesla Model S was stolen from the dealership, the vehicle, after reaching 100 mph, crashed into several other cars and was literally split in half.

This left the front end of the electric car on the street, amongst a wreckage of several other cars and a trashed traffic signal, and the back end wedged between two walls of a West Hollywood synagogue.

The driver of the car is currently in critical condition, according to reports, after he was ejected from the vehicle before the crash.

The accident left two police officers hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries (they’ve since been released), and as many as six injured in total. Debris from the accident was scattered through the 1200 block of North La Brea Avenue.

“I have never seen half of a car wedged into a building before,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Lt. Michael White to KTLA News.

“Everybody who was looking was screaming,” added witness Francisco Estrada. “They tried to help but there was too much smoke.”

According to police reports, the pursuit began at roughly 12:50am, after police attempted to pull over the driver of the stolen vehicle near the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Don Ricardo Drive in the Ladera Heights neighborhood.

The incident first began after a Tesla dealership employee called police to report that someone was ‘tampering or messing with’ the vehicles on the lot.

Suffice it to say, it must have been a very unusual Shabbat morning experience for the congregants of this particular West Hollywood synagogue.
