Study Reveals Rate of Attempted Suicides Among Israel’s Teens
Religious Gays and Lesbians Have Highest Rate of Suicide Attempts
The study, presented at the European Symposium of Suicide and Suicidal Behavior in Tel Aviv, brought to light the statistics and rates of suicide and attempted suicides of Israeli youth, representing those from a wide variety of backgrounds, coming from a number of different of Israeli communities.
According to the study which examined more than 1,100 teens, 3.5% of those interviewed for the study, had attempted suicide. With many of those who attempted suicide deciding not going to hospitals after their unsuccessful attempt, officials claim that the actual number of attempted suicides could be as much as 20 times higher.
Perhaps the most staggering finding of the study is that within Israel’s LGBT community, a remarkable 20 percent of those interviewed reported having tried to kill themselves, more than 100 times the rate of the general Israeli population.
Even more troubling is the fact that religious gays and lesbians had an even higher rate of attempted suicides than the non-religious LGBT community According to experts, much of that statistic is due to the distress felt by homosexuals when confronting their families.
The organization for Religious Homosexuals (HOD) continues to try to lower the attempted suicide rate of homosexuals by increasing awareness of the issue in the educational and rabbinic institutions.
