The Diary of Rywka Lipszyc Published

For years now, the Diary of Anne Frank has brought us all a touching and poignant tale of a young girl’s life during the Holocaust. Her dreams, her ambitions, and the cruelty and suffering she was forced to endure as she hid from Nazi persecution in an Amsterdam basement.

But like Anne Frank, there were tragically countless others who shared her pain, many of whom would go on to write memoirs, teach classes, and to this day, educate our youth on the perils of the Holocaust so that such dehumanization, such tragedy, never occurs again.

In 2008, a diary of another teenage girl living throughout the Holocaust came to light, one of 14-year-old Rywka Lipszyc.

Now, after a thorough examination and authentication process, the diary has officially been published.

The Diary of Rywka Lipszyc sees the world through the eyes of the teenage girl living in the Lodz Ghetto. Lipszyc was religious, and writes throughout her diary of how difficult it was to hold on to the traditions her family had passed on to her, traditions that were sacred and meaningful. “At moments like this,” Rywka wrote, “I want to live so much … Really one needs a lot of strength in order not to give up.”

From Lodz, she was reportedly sent to Auschwitz to a labor camp, and then to Bergen-Belsen. She survived the war, the last record of her being in a German hospital in September, 1945, but was too ill to be transferred and presumably died shortly after.

Lipszyc’s diary was discovered by a Red Army doctor named Zinaida Berezovskaya outside an Auschwitz crematorium during the liberation of the camp. For reasons still unknown, Berezovskaya held onto the diary until her death, and handed it to her son, who did the same. In 2008, Berezovskaya’s granddaughter, a therapist living in San Francisco, brought the story to light.

After a years-long authentication process, the Diary has now been published, and available for sale via the JFCS Holocaust Center. For pre-orders of the 170-page diary, contact books@jfcs.org.
