“There are so many Christmas songs out there. I wanted to give the Jewish kids something to be proud of. We’ve got Adam Sandler’s song, which is hilarious, but I wanted to try to get across some of the depth and spirituality inherent in the holiday in a fun, celebratory song,” Matisyahu has said of the hit.
Last fall, The Maccabeats gained international attention when their Hanukkah themed “Candlelight” went viral on the ol’ YouTube, garnering over 6 million views.
“I think in some way we were given an opportunity to do something and affect people in a deeply spiritual way,” explained one of the group’s members, Noah Jacobson.
“It can be difficult to be a Jew on Christmas. And when you have something to rally around as a Jew, it can be really exciting,” said Maccabeats director, Immanuel Shalev.
For fans of Big Bang Theory and Blossom, keep an eye open for Mayim Bialik (a.k.a. Amy Farrah Fowler) who is featured with her sons in the video.
