The Top 10 Israeli Foods

Israeli cuisine has always had a standard of excellence around the world.

Known for bringing families together to enjoy the diverse and rich meals, it’s no wonder that everyone is obsessed with Israeli cuisine. But with so many dishes out there, which ones should you try first?

We at Shalom Life have saved you some of the trouble and put together a list of our top ten favorite Israeli dishes. Of course, not everything could make the list. Shout outs to bourekas, rugelach, challah bread, schnitzel, khachapuri, and hummus, which doesn’t make the list, because like, who doesn’t know about hummus already?

10.

ZA’ATAR

If you ever wondered what sort of spices were added to hummus or tahini, look no further. Za’atar is a blend of oregano, basil, thyme and savory, just to name a few. It can be used to spice up a dish or even served as its own condiment, when mixed with sesame seeds amongst other things.

9.

TAHINI

A paste made from ground sesame seeds, tahini is found in kitchens all over the Middle East. This paste is a staple of some much beloved foods, like baba ganoush and hummus, or also can act as a topping on meals such as shawarma. It can be put on everything from hearty meat dishes to certain desserts. Although it’s usually flavored with spices, or garlic and lemon, it can come without added flavoring.

8.

LABNEH

A thick cream cheese like substance, labneh is made from strained yogurt and is easy enough to manufacture. While some choose to put it on bagels, crepes and other pastries, it can also serve as a fun confection on top of fruit (notably strawberries). It’s also fairly low in calories, so if you’re on a diet but not satisfied with some of the dietary toppings on the market, you should give labneh a try.

7.

BABA GANOUSH

You know you’re in for a great meal when Baba Ganoush is served ahead of time. This paste is made from pureed eggplant which has been boiled over an open flame until it’s cooked just right. Then it’s mixed with tahini and other spices, depending on what you like, and served with pita. Nutritious, filling, and rich in flavour, baba ganoush makes a fun and unexpected afternoon snack.

6.

FALAFEL

If you’ve never had falafel then you’re seriously missing out. This Israeli dish involves chickpeas and fava beans either together, or on their own, being turned into a paste which is rolled into balls and then deep fried. It’s often served with pickled vegetables, hot sauces and tahini. It can even be hamburger-esque when served in a pita.
