On Thursday, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was ranked 59th on a list of the best academic institutions in the world, as compiled by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Since the Hebrew University’s inception in 2003, it has ranked in the Top 100 every year, peaking at #52 in 2010. The school also managed to rank at #17 in terms of number of alumni that have received Nobel Prizes or Field Medals, while also ranking at #39 for the number of faculties that has won said awards.

This is the second year in a row that three Israeli universities have made the top 100 list. The Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa reached #77, while the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot was at #92. Technion and Weizmann both rose a spot from 2012, while Hebrew University fell from #53.

According to the Times of Israel, Professor Menachem Ben-Sasson, the president of Hebrew University, stated that he was “pleased that once again the Hebrew University has been recognized as Israel’s leading university.”

Ben-Sasson added that he was “proud to see the prominent positions of Israeli research universities in these important international rankings,” attributing the institution’s success to “hard work of our faculty and the university community, and their continuing quest for uncompromising academic and research excellence.

In addition to being Israel’s top university, Hebrew University’s ranking secured it’s spot as the third top academic institution in Asia, with only the Japanese schools of the University of Tokyo (#20) and Kyoto University (#26) succeeding it.

The top five institutions saw little change from previous years, with top two spots being held by Harvard and Stanford. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California-Berkeley, and Cambridge University took up the other top three spots.

As for other Israeli institutions, Tel Aviv University ranked between #101 and #150. Bar-Ilan University and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev both placed between #301 with University of Haifa being placed between #401-500.

Ariel University was the only Israeli university to not be included in the top 500. The school received university status in 2013, but because of its location in the West Bank, has yet to be recognized by the rest of the world.
