Shalom Life is proud to present our 4th annual Top 20 Under 40 list. Over the next 20 days, we will showcase 20 individuals of diverse talents and backgrounds that have made a significant contribution to their field both locally and globally. From entrepreneurs to philanthropists, entertainers to doctors, this list places a spotlight on a small sampling of the spectacular, innovative, and passionate Jews that call Toronto home.

Top 20 Under 40: Samara Shuter

Age: 27

Toronto-based artist Samara Shuter has a joie de vivre that is evident in her work. Working primarily with acrylics and oils on canvas, Shuter’s pieces explore the components of menswear, in a vibrant, unique, and oft times, transfixing way.

“[The suit] has represented something for decades; power, productivity, strength, economic prosperity, and hard work,” she explained.

In a short number of years, Shuter has taken the art world by storm with exhibits throughout North America. With undeniable talent, what’s even more impressive is the fact that Shuter possesses no formal training in fine arts. That’s right ladies and gentleman – behold a raw talent.

Shuter has both solo and group exhibitions lined up for this year, in addition to making contributions to charitable events. Shalom Life was privileged to have a conversation with Shuter about her inspirations, accomplishments, and all else in-between.

SHALOM LIFE (SL): Where were you born?

SAMARA SHUTER (SS): I was born and raised in Montreal, and my immediate family and I moved to Toronto when I was 12 years old.

SL: What did you want to be when you were a child?

SS: I’ve explored the idea of many career paths. I must have been pretty determined to discover what I found most rewarding at a young age… because I’ve hopped around since my very first interest in being a kindergarten teacher, to a web designer, to a musician, to an actor, or a gallery owner- I could go on! I’ve also had over a dozen part-time jobs, and 2 businesses. I was always very entrepreneurial to say the least, and the theme of business and the arts have been concurrent in my life to date.

SL: In a social setting when someone asks “What do you do?”, how do you respond?

SS: When someone asks me what I do, it usually comes out exactly like this: “I am a painter. I paint. Not like…houses. My subject is primarily men in suits actually. No heads though. They’re headless. Not in a dark way. You’ll have to see it, it sounds worse than it is.” And I really love storytelling through film. So I dabble.

SL: What inspires you?

SS: I often get inspired through writing and the concepts of entrepreneurship. I love working with people. There are many variables, but I get kick-started to do a new piece by coming across architecture, colours, patterns, and of course, timeless men’s fashion.
