Top 5 Jewish Moments at The Golden Globes
Last night’s star-studded event was jam-packed with Jewish winners, losers, and great one-liners

Sunday night brought us perhaps the funniest, classiest, and overall most enjoyable Golden Globes ceremony in recent memory. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler managed to provide equals parts professionalism and humor, with a few one-liners that will go down in history, including Poehler’s comments directed towards Katherine Bigelow.
“I haven’t been following the controversy surrounding Zero Dark Thirty,” Poehler began. “But when it comes to torture, I trust the woman who spent three years married to James Cameron.”
The hosts went on to discuss HPV, The Hunger Games, and Quentin Tarantino in their opening monologue, leading to my personal favorite zinger of the night including Franco and Hathaway… which brings us to the Top 5 Jewish moments at the Golden Globes.
1. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s James Franco insult
Everyone remembers the most embarrassing moment in James Franco’s career. No, not when he decided to curate invisible art or release his first music video, but the evening he attempted to host The Academy Awards alongside Anne Hathaway. Last night, Poehler and Fey reminded the audience of Franco’s failure while complimenting Hathaway’s performance in her Golden Globe winning role as Fantine in Les Miserables.
“You gave a stunning performance in Les Miserables,” Fey said. “I have not seen someone so alone and abandoned like that since you were onstage with James Franco at the Oscars.”
2. Jennifer Lawrence Thanking Harvey Weinstein
On the red carpet, Lawrence mentioned that she was feeling “flu-ey”. It turns out that Meryl Streep also wasn’t feeling very well, and decided to pass on attending at all. This absence may have given Lawrence the confidence she needed to announce “I beat Meryl” while accepting the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy, a category in which Streep was competing as well. Lawrence’s funniest line during her acceptance speech was directed at Silver Linings Playbook’s producer, Harvey Weinstein. “Harvey, thank you for killing whoever you had to kill to get me up here today.”
3. Lena Dunham Thanks Chad Lowe
The 26-year old Girls writer/director/producer/actress took home two awards last night including Best actress in a comedic TV series and Best Comedic TV show for Girls. In her acceptance speech, she thanked friends, family, cast, and crew as per usual, but also decided to give a special thanks to Chad Lowe, referencing the moment when Hilary Swank famously forgot to thank her then-husband during her Academy Awards acceptance speech.
4. Daniel Day-Lewis Wins for Lincoln
Going into The Golden Globes, everyone thought Steven Spielberg and Lincoln were a shoo-in for Best Director and Best Dramatic Picture, respectively. Ben Affleck and Argo ended up taking home those awards, but Lincoln’s leading man still went home on top for his remarkable portrayal of one of America’s most beloved President’s. Spielberg wasn’t completely forgotten though. During his acceptance speech, Day-Lewis referred to his director as a “humble master with a quicksilver imagination”
5. Jay Roach thanking his “Jewish” wife
Game Change director, Jay Roach, converted to Judaism for his wife, Bangles front woman, Susanna Hoffs. While delivering a speech last night at the Golden Globes for his win with Game Change, he ended his speech, which included a few Sarah Palin jokes, by thanking his “Jewish” wife, Susanna Hoffs. It is unknown why he mentioned Hoff’s Judaism during the speech. It’s presumably an inside joke.
