Walmart, Sears and Amazon Spark Outrage With Dachau Poster

Although it’s been nearly seventy years since the end of the Second World War, people around the world are still profiting from the horrors that took place in Europe.

Last year eBay was slammed with complaints after the Daily Mail exposed how the company was allowing, and profiting, from the sales of Holocaust memorabilia. The site has since removed the 30+ articles and told media outlets that they would be making a donation of £25,000 to charity in light of their mistake. This past June an auction house was under fire after they sold Nazi paraphernalia in Adelaide.

Most recently Walmart, Amazon and Sears have come into the spotlight after a poster of the iron gates at Dachau, a Nazi labor camp that also performed medical experiments on those in the concentration camp, was being sold online. The poster of the gates, which spell out “Arbeit macht frei” (work will make you free), sparked an uproar amongst shoppers who demanded it be taken down from their sites.

According to spokespeople for both Walmart and Sear, in a report by the Daily Mail, the poster was being sold by a third party vendor through their sites and as soon as they were informed they worked as quickly as possible to remove the posted from the websites.

Sears acknowledged that it violated their terms of use and guidelines and aimed to remove it as quickly as possible. All three companies have since apologized for the matter and are looking into the incident.
