Two months ago, Laszlo Lajos Csatary was finally indicted by Hungarian authorities for Nazi war crimes, after spending a year under house arrest when he was first discovered by the Simon Weisenthal Center as living in Budapest.

Csatary was reportedly involved in assisting in the murders of approximately 16,000 Jews, though he denied all of the charges against him. Representatives from Simon Weisenthal reported that Csatary played a major role in sending Jews to Auschwitz-Birkenau, and that he was the Chief of an interment camp at the first Jewish ghetto in Hungary.

It seems, however, that Csatary will never serve time for his crimes, as he died of pneumonia Saturday in a Budapest hospital, according to his lawyer, Gabor Horvath.

He was 98.

The Simon Weisenthal Center, the organization that continues to bring Nazis to justice, had listed Csatary at the top of their most wanted Nazi criminals in 2012.

Csatary had originally received a death sentence for his war crimes in 1948, but was able to escape to Canada. After his citizenship was revoked fifty years later, he arrived in Budapest, and was to remain under house arrest until his trial, which was suspended three weeks after it began last month, due to a possible double jeopardy.

Reporters from the British tabloid, The Sun, helped the Simon Weisenthal Center track him down to Budapest in 2012.
