William Shatner Thinks His Job is More Important Than Yours

What did your 83-year-old grandfather do this weekend? While mine was most likely screaming at World Cup soccer players on TV and enjoying rye bread with tea in the evenings, legendary ‘Star Trek’ actor, William Shatner, was telling people on Twitter that they didn’t deserve verification because they weren’t as important as him. Perhaps he didn’t use those words outright, but he may as well have.

Shatner has been active on Twitter for several years now, using the account on a daily basis to interact with his fans around the world and promote upcoming projects and ideas.

Of course, he is verified. He has over 1.8 million followers, has a recognizable name, and celebrity status that others may want to impersonate or parody. But after an exchange with Engadget’s social media manager, John Colucci, this weekend… he may not be verified for long.

It all began when Colucci jokingly sent out a tweet reading “Next goal: beat Shatner in follower count:)”.

While the message was intended to be cute and harmless, Shatner was not impressed.

“@johncolucci Why are you even @verified? If this guy can get verified I’ll nominate my Social media guy,” Shatner responded.

Engadget’s Editor in Chief, Michael Gorman, added himself into the mix by replying, “@WilliamShatner @johncolucci @verified He’s verified because he’s excellent at his job. I’d advise your social guy do the same.”

Shatner didn’t let the subject die. He further infuriated both the guys at Engadget and his fans, writing .@Numeson (Gorman’s Twitter handle) @verified So doing a good job is the criteria for Engadget to get their employees verified on @twitter? Seems like an abuse to me, later adding “I want to know how Engadget has all these seemingly unimportant jobs with @verified accounts. @Support it’s a mockery. Want names? Cont.”

After several more exchanges between Engadget employees and other Twitter users, Shatner concluded that if getting verified was as easy as it seems, he doesn’t want the privilege anymore.

“Maybe I need to request to be unverified? Who wants to be part of a broken system that folks can pay $ or reward cronies while others wait?” he wrote, adding “@verified @support unverify my account please.”

At publication, Shatner is still verified… but hopes that you’re not.
